This class will be a quick experiment with nice results, for a taste of dyeing with plant-based dyes. Using a few of the historical dyes of record with lightfast and washfast qualities, we will “play” with our pre-mordanted cotton bandannas in small vessels (quart canning jars) after using some simple shibori work to put patterns in our pieces. We can also experiment with combining dyes to expand our color choices. We will have a discussion of safe and effective dye practice, best practice for good results, and explore possibilities for foraging for local dyestuffs.
Students need to bring the following supplies:
Apron, sturdy shoes, basic sewing supplies (scissors for thread, ruler, thimble if used), reading glasses, if needed.
Materials fee: (To be collected directly from students by instructor in class): $25.00 to cover 2 cotton pre-mordanted Bandannas plus dyes used, specialty needle and thread for stitched shibori, marking pencil and use of instructor’s other shibori materials
